Last month, I had the privilege to represent UNSW at UniGames in Canberra!
Preparing for this competition has been tough on many fronts. As Vice President of the club, not only did I need to practice my own fencing skills but also handle the administration of our team. We needed to plan accommodation, transport and gear for the 25 fencers from UNSW (our largest ever contingent to UniGames). Needing to coordinate with everyone for our journey to be as smooth as possible was difficult, but we were able to pull it off, with delegation and frequent, concise communication to ensure everyone was on the same page.
Finally, the efforts of our team paid off, with UNSW becoming Men's Fencing champions for the first time in 20 years, taking home a fine piece of silverware.
I am also very pleased with my own personal improvements in fencing, entering my 3rd year in the sport. In Individual Foil, I placed 8th and 16th in Individual Sabre. I was honoured to be part of our Foil and Sabre teams, placing 4th in Foil and winning gold in Sabre! Unfortunately, after a wrist injury from the Foil competition, I had to medically withdraw from entering as an Epee competitor.
I now look forward to my next competitions, notably my first national competition in Melbourne, in the Australian Fencing Circuit (AFC) #2 - and many more beyond!
